Spaced Out


I finished knitting the seed stitch neckline tonight. Now I just need to sew on the buttons and do a final steam blocking on all the edgings. As I was arranging the leather buttons that I will use, I looked at the vest and realized I completely forgot to knit in the buttonholes! The directions don't mention anything about buttonholes and I was too engrossed in paying attention to the diagonal rib and cable charts that I didn't even notice. So now I must problem solve. I'm contemplating two options. Do I crochet button loops to the edge of the placket or create buttonholes with my sewing machine? Opinions?

Oh yikes! Sounds like something I'd do too. I think the buttons need to be centered for the vest to look balanced which would preclude you from crocheting loops.

I think either Elizabeth Zimmerman or Montse Stanley have some sort of afterthought buttonhole where you cut the yarn at the BH spot and do something...I shall look for that reference for you.


I also like your idea of making machine buttonholes. Knit up a swatch and try it, maybe with some stabilizer. That could work. Good luck, it's a gorgeous vest!

It is Montse Stanley, Knitter's Handbook on page 203 in my version. Seems to be machine stitched and cut. Let me know if you want a scan of that page :)

sew the buttons on top, and add a catch, snap, or magnetic snap underneath.

This would be cheating a little, but hey. What if you sewed the leather buttons onto the top buttonband, and use smaller buttons on the back of that same button band (so they'd button onto the inside and the leather ones would just be decorative). If you used small enough buttons, you might be able to fudge buttonholes on the underband by just sticking the buttons between stitches.
Does that make sense?

Alternatively, you could use hooks instead of smaller buttons.

Definitely the machine made buttonholes. I think vertical would be best but practice on the swatch first.
